Piggy Munchies
Fresh Vegetables and Fruit
As herbivores, guinea
pigs only eat fruit, vegetables, plants and grains. As guinea pigs cannot make
vitamin C, it is vital that it is present in their diet. The best way to
achieve this is to make sure that your pets have fresh fruit and vegetables
daily.
Favourite
foods include carrots, cauliflower leaves (not the bit we eat!), cabbage,
broccoli, sweet corn, seedless grapes, melon, bananas (in moderation, they can
cause constipation), parsley, swede, turnips and parsnips, although the last
three are not favourites with my piggies.
Cucumber and celery are also enjoyed, but as they do not contain a huge amount
of vitamin C they should only be given as part of a balanced diet. Apples
should also be given in moderation as some guinea pigs can suffer from mouth
sores as a result of eating them.
Grass is an all time favourite; however, introduce your guinea pigs to it
gradually as too much can cause stomach upset. Under no circumstances should
grass clippings from a lawnmower be given to your guinea pigs. Dandelions are
another treat, but beware, too many can have laxative properties!
