Piggy Houses
A regular cleaning regime is imperative to help keep your pet happy and healthy. Cages or hutches should be emptied completely at least once a week, cleaned with a suitable pet disinfectant, available from your local pet shop, and dried before fresh paper and bedding is added. I empty mine completely at least twice a week and to a certain extent this depends upon the number of guinea pigs you have. Wet bedding, excess droppings and stale food should be removed daily.
Outdoor Hutches
If
your guinea pigs are to be kept outside, your hutch should be both draught and
damp-proof. The roof should have a waterproof covering and should slope from
front to back to keep water away from your pets. The hutch should be housed off
the ground and a bedroom compartment will also be needed so that your piggies
have somewhere to snuggle up in. To protect the hutch from the elements, house
it in a shed if at all possible. Regularly check that the doors shut securely,
you could even add locks that will help to deter foxes and cats.
