Piggy Houses

At one time guinea pigs were almost always housed in hutches outside, however, more and more people are choosing to keep their pets indoors.
The recommended amount of space each guinea pig requires is 2sq ft, so if you have a pair of pigs, you will need 4sq ft. When it comes to housing your pets it obviously comes down to personal preference, but if you can provide the largest accommodation you can, you will have happy guinea pigs.
As far as which bedding to use is concerned, everyone has their own preference, however, the general recommendation is to avoid sawdust and certain wood shavings as these can cause respiratory problems. I have always put a thick layer of newspaper on the floor of my hutches/cages, as it is good at soaking up excess urine. To this I then add a thick layer of hay (and sometimes shredded paper if I have any to hand), which the guinea pigs like to both burrow in and eat. Straw should be avoided, as it tends to be sharp and can damage the pig’s eyes.
