Piggy Facts
Although
guinea pigs have generally been kept in hutches outside, they make extremely
good indoor pets. If they are to be housed outside during the winter, it is
important to include plenty of hay in their hutch for them to hide in and eat,
and you will also need to cover the hutch at night with a blanket, or something
similar, to keep them warm. If at all possible, move their accommodation into a
shed or outhouse.
As mentioned previously, guinea pigs are sociable creatures and females (sows) can be kept in pairs or groups quite happily. Whilst two males (boars) can live together, you cannot easily introduce two adult males of a similar age, for they will fight to gain dominance. If you want to keep males, choose litter brothers or introduce a baby boy, aged between 5 – 10 weeks to an older male. Guinea pigs and rabbits should not be housed together as an adult rabbit can seriously injure a guinea pig and may even try to mate with it. Their food requirements are also different.
