Piggy Facts
Guinea pigs were originally introduced into Europe during the 16th century, having originated from the forests and grasslands of South America.
Guinea pigs make ideal pets; they are sociable little animals and love company so you should always have at least two! They are easy to handle, friendly, inquisitive and vocal and although they can sometimes be nervous, they very rarely scratch or bite.
Owning a guinea pig, like any pet, requires a big commitment and unlike some small furries, guinea pigs can live for between 4 and 8 years. They will need to be handled regularly, fed and watered daily, cleaned out thoroughly several times a week and you will need to consider who will look after them when you are away on holiday. Guinea pigs do not require any vaccinations and if cared for properly they rarely become ill.
